Inspired by his own experience of helping a family member during cancer treatment, internationally acclaimed hairdresser, Trevor Sorbie MBE has launched the ‘My New Hair’ initiative, which, through working in partnership with key hair salons throughout the country, offers an invaluable service to women who are suffering with medical hair loss, by providing a premium wig fitting and cutting service.
With Artistic Director, Chris Appleton of George’s Hairdressing, Leicester joining a national network of over 30 professional hairdressers offering the My New Hair service, George’s Hairdressing is the first salon in the area able to offer this particular service to patients suffering from medical hair loss through chemotherapy or alopecia.
The My New Hair programme provides definitive training and education for hair professionals to enable them to provide the highest quality wig fitting and cutting service in the industry. This intensive training course also includes a communications workshop led by cancer nurses who are experienced in helping people improve their communications skills. This invaluable element of the course has been designed to help ‘My New Hair Associates’ put even the most vunerable clients at ease.
Working in partnership with Trevor Sorbie’s My New Hair organisation and Leicester’s Royal Infirmary, George’s Hairdressing have responded to limited NHS resources whereby, following the fitting of their wig, patients often requested to have their wig cut and styled and there was nowhere for them to go and receive a qualified service.
George’s Allandale Road salon is the first within the group to provide senior stylists qualified through the My New Hair training and able to deliver a service which at present includes full consultation and wig cutting and styling. Over the coming months, as more stylists are trained, the company will be looking to expand the service by giving advice on NHS funding available for patients requiring wigs and, following a full client consultation, George’s will order wigs directly from suppliers on behalf of the client. The client will then be invited back to the salon for a private fitting service followed by cutting and styling in the main area of the salon.
George Neal, said “With the foresight of Trevor Sorbie and the first class training provided by the My New Hair programme, Georges Hairdressing have embraced the need for patients to experience a respectful, compassionate and professional consultation and service tailored to their individual requirements within a normal salon environment”
With three large salons in Leicester and a sizeable client-base, George’s Hairdressing also wish to establish this service and support-base should any of their existing clients be affected by medical hair loss. This will include advice on styling, products and homecare to deal with conditions such as alopeacia and other forms of hair loss, within a confidential and relaxing environment.
The My New Hair initiative also sets out to alter preconceptions around wearing a wig and ensuring equity of access to quality products, caring communications and a wig cutting service.
Trevor Sorbie said, “How can a patient feel positive and strong when their personal self image has been rocked to the core by baldness? Giving women back their hair – hair that looks natural, attractive and feminine gives them back a little of their confidence to face the world again. For many of the women I have seen, it’s the missing link in their treatment. My personal goal is to make this service accessible to women around the UK and in the long term, the world.
I am delighted to welcome George’s Hairdressing into the national network of My New Hair salons that can pull together, sharing their experience and offering a best practice service in all their regions”.
Georges Hairdressing joins a host of other highly reputable hair professionals and salons in the My New Hair network including Andrew Collinge, BoilerHouse, Umberto Giannini, Lisa Shepherd, Tribeca, Charles Worthington and commercial partners such as L’Oreal Professionnel.
There is a dedicated website offering at www.mynewhair.org offering tips for both clients and hair professionals on selecting, customising and caring for wigs.
